My Breastfeeding Story
I began my breastfeeding journey almost 21 years ago. When my Daughter was born, I felt that I was expected to figure out breastfeeding on my own. I believed all the stories that I had heard about it from those around me. I remember being told that it's going to hurt and to just deal with it. When breastfeeding began to hurt, I just tried to accept it. When my nipple was cracked and bleeding, I curled my toes, held my breath and cried. Looking back I realized that expecting and accepting pain as the norm was crazy. I finally asked for help when she was 6 weeks old from a Le Leche League leader. I was able to heal and be pain free within a short time. I went on to breastfeed her until she was almost 16 months old. When I had my boys, I knew that pain wasn't okay and that I needed to get help to correct it.
When My 3rd child was a year old, I saw a sign at my WIC office. They were looking to hire Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. I saw it as an opportunity to help prevent other moms from going through the difficulties that I did. I have continued to work with the Peer Counselor program for over 14 years. During that time, I received my Certified Lactation Educator and Certified Lactation Counselor certificates. I wasn't finished learning though. I went to college in my late 30s to take the courses needed to become an IBCLC, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. I took and passed the exam in September 2020, during the height of COVID. The summer of 2021, I finally decided to open a private practice. This would allow me to go to the moms and babies in their homes and via telehealth to work with them one on one. I will continue to move forward in my goal to help families find their own success in their breastfeeding experiences.
